All this work for a vinyl window

err, wait. That’s not right. I’m the tile guy now! 18" tiles with 1/16" joints, because the manufacturer reccomended 1/8" joints would look massive. Schluter trim on the inside of the window, matched so well to the tile that most people so far have assumed it was tile. Reveal around the window has been kept a perfect 5/8 at every point, tiles are all flush, plumb, and level (except for where they’re required to slop down towards the shower pan).

Still loving this process, but oh man it’s a lot of work. It took a full day just to do the interior of that window. 10 small tile cuts, and 4 pieces of trim. 8.5 hours.

Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!!

Level check. Not bad for 18" American made tiles that are not rectified

Kinja'd!!!

These were terrifying cuts, as I knew if they were so much as a hair off they’d need to be redone. At times my boss will spend half an hour agonizing over a 1/64"

Told my boss about the trip and the first thing he said is that he hopes I’ll still want to come back and work afterwords. Fuck yeah.

Four more days, then off to Asia

I thought you had integrated LED lights in between the tiles, then realized it was your laser thingy to measure leveling. How hard would it be to put LEDs in between the tiles? (I have no reason to ask this other than curiosity)

Very doable. The problem would be getting to the the LED lights if a bulb burned out or an electrical gremlin popped up. You'd pretty much be screwed

Oooh I didn’t realize this job meant you’d be working with LASERS

Cool! Where in particular?

Also, that tile job looks like a complete PITA but it definitely looks like you know what the fuck you’re doing. I could never do this job because I’d be off by a few millimetres and give er the ol  “fuck it, good enough” and stubbornly try to make it work until I give up and go back and make the cut proper like I fucking should have hours ago.

The worst part is that all the non-shower windows are gorgeous custom wood affairs. I'm really shocked they didn't go with a nice aluminum

Holy fuck that’s pretty much a dream vacation for me. I’ve been to all of those places (Thailand earlier this year, Tokyo back in 2017 for the F1 Japanese GP) and I want to go back.

I'm pumped. Just found out my friend has to cut his part of the trip short by a week, so I'll even get to experience the solo Thailand traveler part that I was so curious about

I went to Bangkok during Songkran so a lot of the sightseeing stuff got cut out as a fought in a tsunami of water against locals.

If you’re going to see the palace and stuff, bring long pants. There’s a high chance you’ll be turned away from really important places if you’re wearing shorts (and I was there in April when it was hot as fuck, I’m guessing it’s still hot as fuck there).

Island wise, I went to Koh Tao, Koh Phangan and then went to beaches around Krabi. We went on boat tours from Koh Tao (around the island) and Krabi (out to Koh Phi Phi). Koh Phangan was during the full moon party which I would’ve enjoyed if I were ten years younger but it’s really for kids still in school or having recently graduated.

Tokyo is my favourite city ever, I hope you spend several days there. I spent a few full days there but I recommend going to the government tower which is free and gives you a birds-eye view of the urban sprawl and going to see a baseball game (I saw the Yakult Swallows) since it’s an experience in itself. Bonus you you can see a soccer game (which I saw in Kyoto). That’s all on top of the regular tourist stuff which is worth seeing but you will not regret just walking around and getting lost in Tokyo.

I’m so jealous, I hope you get the kick out of Japan and Thailand that I did.

I’m jealous. I really want to go back for Sangkran. I’ll be watching Google flights religiously and booking as soon as I see a good deal.

Anything interesting in Krabi itself? Most of my time will be at koh phi phi and koh Samui, but I’ve got 5 nights left to plan out and I’m trying to decide where to stay.

I'll definitely visit the government tower!

In Krabi, there’s no one thing in particular. We stayed right by Ao Nang beach which is quite pretty and took a shitty boat over to Railay beach, but it’s mostly just hanging out on the beach. We took boat tours to Ko Phi Phi and other nearby islands for snorkelling and swimming.

They do have excellent Indian food and quite a few Indian tourists from the looks of it. It is Thailand but god damn it was really good Indian food. Krabi is relatively expensive since it is a tourist heavy destination.

I spent almost no time on Koh Samui since we went right from the airport to the pier to go to Koh Tao (which I thoroughly enjoyed). All I know is that there is a friendly bar right across from the pier that has ice cold beers served in coozies so they stay cold.

If you’re in Koh Samui, ferries over to Koh Tao are relatively cheap. IIRC I think it takes about two hours to get there but it’s a pretty quiet, calm island. My friend and I walked everywhere and they have quite a nice, charming walk along the west coast of the island with a lot of restaurants/bars. Had some absolutely mindblowing duck-based noodle dishes there.

If I were you, my planning would really be based upon what you normally prefer. We did snorkelling/swimming tours while on the islands and spent evenings drinking a lot of beers, watching sunsets, premier league soccer, etc. at local joints. In retrospect, I could’ve cut out some time on the islands for a few more days in Bangkok. If I were in your position, unless you’re someone who loves beaches and generally lazing around I would take the extra time in Tokyo or Bangkok if possible.
